Fernando Abreu is the principal architect of CENTRO Architects based in Mérida, specializing in remodeling and maintaining homes in the Centro area. With a deep commitment to high-quality work, Fernando has built a reputation for his expertise in navigating the unique challenges of working with older properties, as well as his experience collaborating with international clients.
Fernando’s journey into architecture was shaped by his early experiences. In 2004, during a mission trip to rural communities outside Mérida, he witnessed the selfless generosity of the family he was staying with, sparking his desire to give back to others. This led to his involvement in a program aimed at helping the region’s poorest communities, where he and his team taught locals to build sustainable kitchens using traditional Mayan techniques. This project, which resulted in the construction of over 100 kitchens, was pivotal in shaping Fernando’s approach to design — one focused on empowerment and social responsibility.
In 2006, as part of his architectural studies, Fernando’s passion for social good led him to join the Rural Studio outreach program in Alabama, where he collaborated on the "20K House" project — a model home designed to be built for $20,000 to address affordable housing needs. This project became his thesis and reinforced his belief in architecture’s power to uplift communities. While in Alabama, Fernando met his future wife, who was also studying to become an architect and later joined him in his work.
Returning to Mérida in 2007, Fernando co-founded his design-build firm. Facing early challenges in the business, he expanded his education with a year-long course in structures and a master's degree in construction. Fernando also worked with a renowned local architect, gaining invaluable experience in downtown restorations, before focusing on growing his own firm. [see his resume]
Today, Fernando’s firm is recognized for its successful work in Mérida’s historic Centro. His approach to architecture reflects his core values of fairness, respect, and empowerment, which are deeply embedded in the culture of his company. Fernando’s building crew is largely made up of people from the small towns he once worked with, and he is dedicated to providing them with fair wages, professional development, and opportunities for growth. Fernando’s office is a collaborative space where young architects can learn and thrive.
A leader in his field, Fernando is known not only for his problem-solving expertise in improving historic properties but also for his integrity and unwavering commitment to meeting client expectations. His friendly, approachable nature has fostered long-lasting relationships with clients, many of whom become friends. He regularly gives talks, makes DIY videos, and shares online tips to help homeowners better understand and care for their properties, furthering his mission of empowering the community.
At the heart of Fernando’s work lies the same motivation that first inspired his journey: a belief in the power of architecture to give back, make a meaningful difference, and create beautiful, functional spaces for everyone.
