We had the pleasure of designing and constructing this two-bedroom retreat for a U.S. artist who frequently visits Mérida. Project 63, also known as Casa Luna Llena, reflects our commitment to outstanding design, with every detail carefully crafted to enhance both beauty and comfort. The ironwork, for instance, was crafted so that each piece aligns perfectly both vertically and horizontally. The pasta tile floors were designed to ensure that the rug patterns in each room are proportional and aesthetically pleasing, harmonizing with the surrounding spaces. In the kitchen, the pasta tiles on the island were arranged to avoid any cuts, fitting seamlessly within the space. The proportions of the patio arches and the distribution of the stone floor on the terrace were also carefully considered. Lighting was given significant consideration: the iron doors have glass to allow ample light into the spaces, supplemented by a row of skylights that enhance natural illumination. Light-colored finishes were chosen to further brighten the space. All the skylights in the house are operable, enabling cross-ventilation. The iron glass panels on the skylights can be opened and have screens to keep out mosquitoes while allowing in the breeze, creating a chimney effect where hot air rises and exits. Alternatively, there are glass options for air conditioning use. The views are also a key feature, such as the entrance room where you can see the pool and garden, and then turn to view the rest of the project. As you move through the house, from the kitchen to the dining room, different spaces reveal themselves, each with its unique appeal. The exterior bathtub of the main bedroom is particularly interesting; you enter the bathroom with a large glass window overlooking a garden, and you can step out into the garden to a bathtub where you can look up and see the sky. Our experience having an in-house maintenance department provided us with valuable insights into effective design and common maintenance issues. We applied this expertise to ensure the house is low-maintenance in many ways. This project stands as a proud example of our commitment to design excellence, with the client’s collaboration playing a vital role in achieving its beauty.
